Final Expenses Insurance FAQs

  • North Cover Final Expenses Insurance covers any cause of death, including accidental death for the first 12 months of having the policy, or death following a terminal illness (defined as having less than 12 months to live). Coverage excludes death from suicide within 24 months of taking out a policy.

  • Great news, you don’t! We like to keep things as simple as possible. There are no medical or blood tests to take, and no intrusive questions about your health to answer.

  • As long as your policy remains active, you can keep your North Cover Final Expenses Insurance coverage for life. When you turn 85, you can choose to cancel your coverage to receive an early cash out of 75% of your benefit amount. Or, if you keep your policy active, we will stop charging you premiums after age 90 – but you can keep your coverage!

  • With North Cover Final Expenses Insurance, you can pick a level of coverage from $3,000 to $25,000. How much coverage you choose will depend on your individual needs, including what you might have in mind for how your loved ones celebrate your life.

  • Yes. We accept Visa or MasterCard for North Cover Final Expenses Insurance. We also accept payment by direct debit from your bank or credit union.

  • As well as Visa or MasterCard, we also accept payment by direct debit from your bank or credit union for North Cover Final Expenses Insurance.

  • Your North Cover Final Expenses Insurance policy will cover you wherever you are in the world, as long as you’re a Canadian resident (outside of Quebec). However, you must not have plans to move internationally when you apply.

  • An “accidental death” is a death that happens solely because of an “accident,” and within 90 days after the accident has happened. Read our relevant Policy Document to understand more about how we define an accident.

  • Yes. North Cover Final Expenses Insurance has a 30-day cooling off period from the day your policy starts. If you cancel your policy in this period without having made a claim, we’ll give you a full refund of premiums paid. However, you won’t receive a benefit or have any premiums refunded if your coverage is cancelled after the 30-day cooling off period.

    If you’re 85 years of age or older when you cancel your coverage, you’ll be eligible for an early cash out option and receive 75% of your coverage amount paid to you. Note that as you’ve cancelled your policy, you’ll no longer be eligible to make a claim.

  • North Cover Final Expenses Insurance is provided by Teachers Life, a federally regulated insurer based in Ontario, established in 1939.

  • Yes, you can. A single plan will cover just your own life, or you can cover yourself and your spouse or partner with our multi-life plan.

  • Yes, you can choose who will receive your North Cover Final Expenses Insurance benefit by calling us or completing a Beneficiary Form. You can even choose to split the money between up to five beneficiaries.

    If you don’t choose anyone to receive your benefit, it will go to the policy owner. If that’s you, the benefit will be paid to your legal personal representative (usually your estate) or to another eligible person in accordance with Canadian law.

  • All Canadian residents outside of Quebec between 20 and 80 years old, are guaranteed acceptance. There are no medical or blood tests required.

  • With North Cover Final Expenses Insurance, you have a 30-day cooling off period from the day your policy starts. This means that you can cancel your policy in this period (if you have not made a claim) and we’ll give you a full refund of premiums paid. However, you won’t receive a benefit or have any premiums refunded if your coverage is cancelled after the 30-day cooling off period.
